I thought I’d slip in my introduction before the new year begins and initiate the education category of the Linden Lab blog. I’m on the Community Development team and have been responding to the flood of requests from educational organizations to start projects on the Teen Grid of Second Life. Over the past year, a very energetic educator community has developed on the Main Grid. Pathfinder Linden set up the Second Life Educators List (SLED) in October, 2005. Today, the SLED list is an effective vehicle for 1200+ members to share knowledge gained working with undergraduate and graduate students in Second Life. The Teen Grid is… home to Teen Second Life, an oasis of creativity for teens only. In addition, Teen Grid provides a base for several innovative middle school and secondary school education projects trailblazing the use of Second Life with teens. Some of these are open to visitors from TSL, others are closed systems designed for their own students and staff. You can find links to several of these projects - from the high profile and very open Global Kids project to the teen library project Eye4You Alliance officially launching in January to the Pacific Rim Exchange project connecting students in Modesto, CA with students in Kyoto, Japan - on the SimTeach wiki hosted by educator Jeremy Kemp. I’ll be sharing glimpses of other Teen Grid projects in the months to come in the Second Opinion column aptly called “The Teen Grid.” The current column features an interview with two educators teaching programming to students on Campus: Teen Second Life. And check the November back issue of the Second Opinion for my Teen Grid column about Global Kids. (Pick up your inworld copies here.) If you’d like to join the conversation with other educators working (and playing) with teens on the Teen Grid, sign up for the SLEDT email list (125+ members) and introduce yourself.
