MeetingatALA Annual

Greetings,

I have seen lots of great programs like the one below advertised for ALA
Washington. My time commitments do not allow me to attend this year, but
it would be great to be able to participate virtually through other
means.

I know that the ALA Washington Office has a presence in SecondLife. So,
if we have already put resources into that medium, would it be possible
to try to broadcast at least a fe (Source: gmane.education.web4lib) Sigue leyendo

Library celebrates one year in second life

This weekend, InfoIsland on Second Life celebrates their one year anniversary. Over ten islands and events running throughout the day, including a discussion from Mukwa Dibou (aka ALA President elect, Loriene Roy pictured here) who said that sl gives additional options for communication and social spaces. She also invited everyone to the National Museum of the American Indian in D.C. on Friday, June 22, 3:30p-5:30p for a celebration in her honor.
Don’t miss Cerulean Vesperia’s presentation on Sunday at 5p sl (PST) on Pain in the Brain! How to cope with teens in the library on HealthInfo Island in second life. (check out this article from this month’s issue of Scientific American Mind on The Myth of the Teen Brain by Robert Epstein.)
Other events include book discussions, building classes, music concerts, machinima classes, tours, grand openings of other buildings, and more. It’s an amazing weekend.
Check out the article on page three of the Metaverse Messenger, Second Life’s newspaper for more detailed information. Create your own avatar at www.secondlife.com, install the program on your computer, log in, click on search and type in Info Island and teleport.

Librarians in second life

Following some initial discussions on LIS-Link, Phil Bradley proposed a meeting in Second Life so that those of us who were interested could explore its potential. Thanks to our hosts at the SL University of Hertfordshire virtual campus, it was very instructive. As I supposed, there is a huge potential for what we might loosely call ‘library outreach’ – interfacing with whole new set of users. I think there might be potential for school libraries, for example, to use it as a library portal – although three obvious hurdles spring to mind: the time it would take to set up effectively, the school firewall which would almost certainly prevent its use, and the bandwidth on some school networks. But it does show promise and is worth further investigation. Phil has posted on LIS-Link and suggested that: … there’s clearly an interest in looking at the possibilities in more depth.Consequently – for those people who are interested; where should we take it next? Regular meetings once a month? Or perhaps those librarians who are actively doing things in Second Life might like to post to the list details of any ‘open days’ they might plan? Perhaps the various SL libraries could host occassional meetings.[Added a couple of hours later!]:Of particular relevance here is a posting from Eduserv in their blog: This is a slightly premature announcement, because we are still finalising contracts and so on, but news is slowly leaking out about the projects that we have funded under this year’s grants call…:SLEUTH – Second Life Educational Undertakings in Theatre HistoryLearning from Online Worlds; Teaching in Second Life>>Technorati tags: secondlife; libraries>>IceRocket tags: secondlife; libraries (Source: info NeoGnostic) Sigue leyendo

The joys of over-social-networking

I don’t remember the subject of my first email–but I believe that I sent it somewhere around my 8th grade or freshman year of high school. Then, after four years of becoming increasingly addicted to email, I went to college. Ethernet brought instant messaging and a whole new world of friends in immediacy. Now…I feel like I’m assaulted on every side with new ways to meet and interact with people and the vast majority of them are going by the wayside. Ones that I’ve tried include AIM, Yahoo Messenger, MSN Messenger, Trillian, MySpace, Facebook, Twitter, Ning, SecondLife, LibraryThing, LinkedIn and somewhere I think I still have a registration to Judy’s Book. I’m sure I’ve forgotten something…And apparently I’m showing my age because I still prefer to email or send an instant message. Although the Verizon plan I signed up for this evening does include unlimited messaging to anyone on any network, I’m not even really into text messaging. I use it for a few friends–one in particular whose text-spelling is so horrendous that to actually read the message you get nothing but gobbly-gook. In this world of skimming and processing without my brain really working, I can always read her messages clearly. It’s not a primary form of communication for me though…apparently this puts me behind the groove.Among my immediate family, I’m the communicator. I have a couple of close friends from junior high still, one of whom I had dinner with a little over a week ago and another whose wedding I will attend in the fall. I keep up with people from past jobs, schools, lives (it feels that way some days). And yet–it took a conscious effort to remember that I had to go in and change a status on MySpace and Facebook last week. I don’t have a huge desire to be “friends” with everyone in the United States with my last name. I don’t feel the need to befriend cool strangers who “want to meet other cool people.” Selectivity–it’s a beauteous thing. … Sigue leyendo
