Caledon library activities
Events at the Caledon Library, an affiliate of the Second Life Library 2.0
July Book Discussion , July 15th, 2-4pm SLT
Whitehorn Memorial Library, Caledon Victoria City
http://slurl.com/secondlife/Caledon%20VictoriaCity/43/209/23
The July book of the Month at the Caledon library is The Island of Doctor Moreau by Mr H.G. Wells.
The discussion will be led by Mr Dominico Benelli, of Caledon
This book is a dark 19th century fantasy of what might result if the (then very controversial) practice of vivisection
were carried to an extreme, and a moral contenplation of the nature of human-ness. But, because it is by Wells,
it is also stirring tale of adventure. In the 21st century, it is again being read as a parable of what it means
when science experiments with genetics.
Copies of the work may be had at the library, or found in the Aetheric Edition, at the following locale

This ball will introduce the Caledon Library’s *Ellen Throckmorton Riel Memorial Etiquette Collection*, which honours the memory of Grandmother of the Duchesses of both Loch Avie and Carntaigh. The Collection will be employed for the edification of Caledon for the Fall and Winter Social Seasons. The date of the ball, July 14th, is also Bastille Day:
“Bastille Day, or the Fourteenth of July, is the symbol of the end of the monarchy and the beginning of the Republic. The national holiday is a time when all citizens celebrate their membership to a republican nation. … Sigue leyendo

Re: the end of myspace, secondlife, and twitter
haha this PC Magazine author is out of touch.(wrong) He’s looking at it
from a technologists perspective, not a
regular person’s. Yes Myspace seems to be running on Cold Fusion, (?) and
is buggy. People by and large do not care. Recently I was in a public
library (returning one of my kid’s books) .. the ENTIRE island of
public pcs was lined with regular folk, and all ten of them, no exceptions,
were on MySpace. Embarrasing for the library(?), but funny to me. A huge
phenomenon as mainstream media is tries to take it down because of all of
the real and imagined wild west social dangers and ill intended consequences
of strangers becoming friends. I saw a TV show whgere Dr. Phil (TM) warned
of MySpace horrors. (He is paid by Match.com by the way) : )
But I do predict social networking sites like Myspace to evolve with more
social filtering mechanisms to separate people by status, age, and social
standing (for various reasons).

Building better communities awards for second life libraries!
” Libraries exist to make a difference. Whether they are a public library, on campus, or within a governmental or business organization, they are instrumental in creating better places to live, work, and learn.” An independent panel of library leaders from around the world selected the awards recipients. Any SirsiDynix library worldwide whose technology leadership has distinguished it in service to its user communities was eligible. The 2007 recipients are: Alliance Library System (East Peoria, Ill.): A regional library system in central Illinois started a library in the three-dimensional virtual world of Second Life to gain experiential knowledge about providing library services in a virtual world. http://www.alliancelibrarysystem.com ….Read the rest at: http://www.sirsidynix.com/Company/bbc_awards.php

Secondlife singapore meetup (i’ve stopped counting how many)
Received the email notification for a SecondLife Singapore meetup in Lion City. I was about an hour late but decided to drop by anyway. But first I had to download and install yet another version of SL…I managed to find them over at what appears to be a sound stage. Very, very nice build!A whole bunch of them rezzed into view. Most were seated at the front of the stage.I sat myself on the right of the stage (incidentally, turned out that the avatar next to me belonged to a Information Management student from Temasek Poly; she’s part of the last batch of students for the course, as the course was being withdrawn).Alvin, the host of the meetup (owner of Lion City, and organiser of SL Singapore), was asking people to introduce themselves. I worked the camera view to peer from where Alvin was standing.Out of curiosity, I searched for “Singapore” under the groups in SL. The number of groups have exploded since Lion City was created. The National University of Singapore has a group too. There were two groups setup by marketing agencies (hmm… very interesting). Oh, a group into “BDSM” — well you get all kinds. The SL Singapore group itself has 420 members (it may not be indicative of actual number of active SL users but it’s a respectable number from the days when there were only two or three members in the list). The meetup had almost ended by then. I was about to log off when Australian Liblogarian & SecondLifer Kathryn Greenhill IMed me in SL. I offered her a teleport to Lion City. We ended up chatting in a drain. Kevin (standing over us) wondered aloud why librarians like to chat in drains, LOLAt first I mistook Kathryn for Maeve, an Australian librarian who left this comment in an earlier post. Then I remembered Kathryn’s avatar, from this post.Kevin (who didn’t know about the SL Singapore meetup until I IMed him at the closing minutes) ended up chatting with Kathryn about education in SL. … Sigue leyendo

Re: the end of myspace, secondlife, and twitter
My personal thoughts are similar. Even if we do not maintain a
presence, we better understand these various of communication,
collaboration, and socialization.
I use Second Life a little. I participate when events occur that
interest me. So far my “users” are not there, but I have found many
personal events. I have virtually attended conferences, meetings,
poster sessions, and other activities that Icould not have attended
in-person. I also have made contact with and continue to communicate
with librarians that did not attend the same conferences as me or are
in different types of libraries. It has been very helpful to hear
perspectives on issues from other types of librarians and/or
experience the activities they are promoting to their users.

Reinventing reference 3: keynote by michael stephens
Michael Stephens was the first speaker in RUSA’s Reinventing Reference 3 preconference. It was great to see him speak–he’s very dynamic and engaging. He gave us an excellent basic introduction to web 2.0, how it is affecting libraries everywhere and why we should be involved.Takeaways:Libraries must evolve, let go of control and be visible. Evolve: your reference desk must not be a fortress. Let go of control: Don’t ban technologies such as cell phones because they are technology; ban the “bad behavior” that can result. Ask your users to be courteous, respect the space. Be visible: set up shop with a laptop where your users are: in the dining halls, in the coffee shops. The librarian can be “In” wherever there is free wifi.the hyperlinked library has open & honest conversations, is transparent about planning services (and everything else), and speaks in a human voice.Adopt a 2.0 philosophy:Drop the culture of “perfect” and develop a culture of “experiment and play.”…from top to bottomTrust your users. Trust each other.Learn from the gamers: if you make a mistake, back up and try againIdeas:Advocate having a “Laptop Librarian” in dining halls, the Technology Commons, the IT helpdesk and in dorms.Create a library podcast tour – done by students.Create a subject guide wiki.Teach liaisons how to use RSS tools in databases and journals and advocate adding these feeds to department websites.Look into text messaging for reference.Add the meebo widget to OUR CATALOG! labelled “Live Help! 8a – 11p”Look at McMaster U’s Emerging Technology group blogBuild a reference portal on NetVibesStay away from “Death by Risk AversionHave our architects build the Studio space in SecondLife and have staff and users explore and give feedback.Coolness. Now, on to David Ward’s IM presentation. I’ll edit this later to add links. (Source: Chronicles of Bean) Sigue leyendo

Re: the end of myspace, secondlife, and twitter
Does Twitter make tons of money? How? I decided to try it out
(http://twitter.com/LA2) and I don’t pay anything and I don’t see
any advertising. So how do they make money? From sending SMS?
Many years ago I heard about there.com, and they seem to be around
still. I guess there are at least a dozen (?) similar virtual
worlds out there. But all everybody is talking about is Second
Life. How can that be? Superior marketing?

Re: the end of myspace, secondlife, and twitter
Hi list members,
I always follow the conversations on this list with interest, but as I
finished my Masters in Information Management (Library and Information
Studies) last week, I finally consider myself qualified to make my first
post!
I’m the first to admit that I’m not as sold on the validity of online
social networks as many in this group. I don’t have a Second Life
avatar, I’ve never used Twitter or MySpace, and I only use Facebook to
keep up with truant friends overseas. Yet the Lance Ulanoff article was
so trashy and arrogant that even I objected to it! However, I think he
actually gave us some scope for intelligent discussion, (mostly
unintentionally I suspect). The link to John C Dvorak’s column
(http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,1895,2141525,00.asp) in particular
provides us with a topic for real scholarly debate, both on this list
and outside it.
Dvorak suggests that we consider archiving Twitter conversations for
future access. This is a notion that clearly exposes him to ridicule

Just did & to do list : exciting times of a medical librarian
Just DID …
It has been very busy last weeks, socially as well as work related.
I visited Prague for almost a week for the Inforum 2007 conference.
After that I met the Rolling Stones in Goffert Park in Nijmegen (together with 50.0000 others).
The next week I flew to Zagreb, Croatia to have a presentation at the Medical Information Conference Croatia 2007 (MICC).I jumped directly in to my car when back from the airport to drive to a weekend camping event together with our neighbours at the Papaver in Sellingen. An absolute must-do tip!
We (The neighbours) organise a “special BBQ” every year, the Neighbourhood BBQ with a high Jamie Oliver level, fresh herbs, a lot of quality fish (from Kees at the Groningen Market), bio-meat, wonderful salades, dressings and side-dishes.And to complete this string of events I was invited to talk about my hobby
, Second Life and Libraries at the first session of the “Meet the Expert” series from the NVB WB/HB on June 19th in Utrecht. The slides are available at my SLIDESHARE.NET page.Still to Do List:
Post about The National Medical Library of the Czech Republik, their Medvik system and the creation of their Library Toolbar. The Ikaros company and intensions to start a presence in Second Life for New Media EducationNeedleSearch, an absolutely marvelous Firefox add-on that offers an incredible tool for users to make their own search engine collection. It also helps me to enable even more licenced databases for our Library Toolbars.Read presentations and comments on “Digitale Bibliotheek”Post about Zagreb, People from Ovid and medical libraries in Eastern European CountriesTags: zagreb, ovid, db2007, library toolbars, needlesearch, ikaros, nlk, slideshare, secondlife, second life, papaver, inforum, micc
